Chapter Seventeen

Pet

We had such a fun day that I’m disappointed when, after dinner, all Master does is walk me to the blue room and leave me with nothing but a “Goodnight, Eryn.” He doesn’t even wait to hear my whispered reply. It was weird to hear my name on his lips. I asked him before not to call me ‘Pet’, but now, I miss it.

I flop back onto the mattress and stare at the ceiling.

I hate this room.

I list everything I hate about it, from the bland blue walls to the boring white ceiling to the clinical carpeting until I fall asleep, then list them again in the morning when I wake up and wait for my breakfast. At least my bruises are finally gone, though now my thighs ache from the time spent in the saddle.

Worth it, though.

The next day, the ache is worse, and I wonder how much of it stems from my loneliness. And, I admit, a low-grade fear that I’ve been abandoned again. The day after, the pain’s not so bad. After a week, I don’t feel it anymore, but I wish I did, if it means not being so isolated. Even Maggie doesn’t stay long, and when she does visit, her eyes are filled with pity.

I thought we had a good day, wandering the woods, but maybe I bored him. Maybe he regrets letting me meet his Nightmares and babble about wildflowers. I shouldn’t be surprised. Master spent an entire day with me. It was more time than anyone in my pack ever spent with me by choice, except Alpha, and Alpha was always busy with running the pack. I shouldn’t have expected Master to be able to deal with me, either. I need to be grateful that he lets me sleep in a bed and eat such good food instead of table scraps.

My sigh is loud. I feel restless and antsy, filled with too much energy but nothing to expend it on. My foot taps on the mattress, knee bouncing, but nothing helps. I’ve never spent so long inside in my life.

I start listing the scientific names of all the wildflowers I saw last week alphabetically. I’m on rudbeckia when the door cracks open. I look up quickly as Master slips inside. He smiles when he sees I’m awake, like no time has passed. “Come on. I want to show you something.”

Anything is better than lingering in this room, so I roll off the bed and follow him. He leads me to a nice living room on the other side of the house. The furniture is just as old as his bedroom set and just as fancy as the dining room, but a small mountain of cheap cloth shopping bags sprawl across the wood coffee table.

“I guessed your size, so if something doesn’t fit, just start a pile.” Master grabs the first bag and practically shoves it at me. It takes me a second to realize he’s not angry. He’s embarrassed.

It allows me to
